What is Neuromuscular Massage Therapy?

Neuromuscular Therapy, or as we call it NMT, is a specialized modality of massage therapy. NMT is the application of static pressure on specific myofascial lines intended to reduce pain. This technique manipulates the body's soft tissue (muscles, tendons, and connective tissue) to balance the central nervous system.

In a healthy individual, nerves transmit impulses (responsible for movement) to the body. Factors such as injury, trauma, and stress accelerate nervous system transmission, inhibit equilibrium, and can disrupt this impulse transmission. This disruption can cause dysfunction and even pain.

NMT therapists are versed in the nervous system's physiology and its effect on the musculoskeletal system. A NMT Therapist is also familiar with kinesiology, biomechanics, and fundamentals of the nervous system.

Techniques using Neuromuscular Massage

Neuromuscular Therapy consists of specific directional patterns on spasmodic muscle tissue. The practitioner should apply Therapeutic pressure using the fingers, knuckles, or elbow. Once administering pressure to an area of muscle spasm, hold consistently for ten to thirty seconds.

Benefits of Neuromuscular Therapy

From the moment you step into Veridical Therapies, we'll start working with you to diagnose the source of your chronic pain and discomfort.

We'll build a custom therapy plan that utilizes Neuromuscular Massage Therapy to address your specific needs and points of discomfort.

Key benefits of Neuromuscular Massage therapy include:

  • Treat Trigger Points
  • Address Referral Pain
  • Improve Balance and Posture
  • Improve Biomechanical Dysfunctions
  • Enhance Range of Motion
  • Promote Overall Health

Pain Reduction using Neuromuscular Massage

We utilize Neuromuscular Therapy to address five culprits potentially responsible for pain patterns:

1. Ischemia:This is a lack of blood supply to specific soft tissues that can make surface areas sensitive to the pressure.

2. Trigger Points: The term we utilize for dense muscle tissue that has referral patterns.

3. Nerve Compression or Entrapment: Muscularly dense tissue that reduces the amount of space for nerve glides.

4. Postural Distortion: Distortions in the body that cause pain patterns due to your structure experiencing misalignment.

5. Biomechanical Dysfunction: The result of less than optimal movement patterns for your particular design. Spasmodic soft tissue is typically painful to the touch. Ischemia, as mentioned above, can be a substantial contributory factor to chronic pain as the muscle tissue and nerves could lack proper blood flow (usually due to the muscle spasm).

When the muscle lacks proper blood supply, many people can report soreness after physical activity. Once a person gets a Neuromuscular Massage, they tend to experience far less discomfort in physically demanding activities.

What to Expect with Neuromuscular Massage

Neuromuscular Massage Therapy tends to be slightly painful at first, but the pain should never be more than the client can bear. Communication is critical during Neuromuscular Massage Therapy. The pain should never be more than the client can bear. The therapist's goal should not be to induce a flight or fight response but attempt to achieve a deep state of parasympathetic muscular relaxation and alleviate muscle spasms.
